認知症とヨガに関する研究

代替医療の雑誌によると,一時間のヨガが脳内のGABAのレベルをあげるとのこと。
実験では27%も上昇したとのこと。
また、アルツハイマー病ではGABAが減少することも知られています。

New research published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine shows that an hour of yoga raises levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the brain. Increased GABA levels reportedly help counteract anxiety and other neuropsychiatric disorders. The research, carried out at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and McLean Hospital, used magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging to examine two groups of people both before and after a hone our activity. One group practiced yoga, while the other read a book. Participants in the yoga group had a 27% increase in GABA levels, while those in the reading group remained unchanged. Co-authors Chris Streeter from BUSM and Domenic Ciraulo pointed out that this research shows a method of treating low GABA states. Fairly obvious -- yes -- but this shows a nonpharmacological method for increasing GABA levels that people can act on now, without waiting for a drug to go through FDA approval. Research from UNLV has shown that GABA levels fall in Alzheimer's disease. If the logic follows, yoga may be beneficial for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
